Ghawar
is the biggest oil field of the world. It is
situated in Saudi-Arabia and has been developed
1948/1949. Approximately 60 to 65% of the total
oil production of Saudi-Arabia from 1948 to 2000
derives from this oil field. The dialy production
is estimated to about 5 mln. barrels, which
resembles 6% of the total world production (~84
Mio. barrels per day). Gigantic production
Estimations on the
total amount of available oil in Ghawar vary
between 70 and 170 giga-barrel. Nowadays, about 8
mln. barrels are being pumped into the oilfield
to keep the production on the current level. 2005
it has been discussed, Ghawar had already arrived
at the production maximum. The magazine
Energy and Capital wrote in 2006 a
member of the Saudi-Arabian oil company Saudi
Aramco did say that the oldest fields (including
Ghawar) showed a decline of 8% in the yearly
